Boy was I wrong! I got the job with Escape travel which was part of the Flight Centre group when I was 21 years old. I had such desire to become a travel agent because I always dreamed to travel.
I started working at McDonalds at the age of 15, after being there for 2 years and finishing school I moved onto working in Hotels in food and beverage at the Holiday Inn Sydney airport, Crown Plaza Terrigal. I never wanted to go to Uni, I always had the plan to work my way up. From food and beverage, I wanted to get into front office and finally landed a traineeship with a small boutique hotel called Hotel stellar in Sydney oxford street on the front desk.
Before this though I had gone for job interviews at the Holiday where I was working for the front desk however was not successful at getting the job.
Hotel Stellar was only a 30-room hotel right in the heart of the Gay and lesbian district of Sydney. I started off working the 7am – 3pm shift taking over the overnight shift at 7am. I would work in the breakfast room in the mornings preparing a continent style breakfast of boiled eggs, toast with spreads and cereal. Then after breakfast I would move on to replacing the mini bar in the rooms. Then I moved up to front desk, reservations and then onto Hotel shift manager.
Working at Hotel stellar was a breeze compared to any other jobs I had. It was never too busy and very easy going. We were a 3-star hotel. The only really bad thing was when working the evening shift on front desk on my own and we would have check ins particularly from America that where under the impression they where staying in a 4-5 star. They where very demanding, loud, and in my face.
